JOOSE KESKITALO is Finnish singer and songwriter who has released 10 albums since 2004. Keskitalo is known for his quirky stage charisma, rough-hewn lyrics and a jangly guitar supported by a harmonica. New Songs for Old Motifs (Helmi Levyt, 2021) is his first album consisting of original material in English. The songs on range from the wistful to the ominous, incorporating elements from the British and American folk traditions. One can also hear echoes of artists such as Leonard Cohen and Will Oldham. The arrangements are minimal and earthy, creating a quietly mesmerizing album. The song “The Golden Apple” is from the album Happiness (Helmi Levyt, 2022) released with the Paavoharju collective. THE GOLDEN APPLE as described by Joose Keskitalo: “In his epic poem the Aeneid, Virgil describes how the gods failed to invite Discordia, the goddess of strife, to a wedding. Discordia arrives at the reception and in revenge throws a golden apple among the guests, bearing the inscription “for the most beautiful”.
